Like Sage and Sweetgrass, cedar is used to purify and cleanse the home, encouraging unwanted spirits to leave and protecting a person, place or object from unwanted influences. When cedar is burned, it pops and crackles. This is said to call the attention of the Great Spirit to the join the celebration and gathering, or to the offerings being made. The smoke of burning cedar is said to attract good spirits and eliminate negative energies
Cedar is also used in sweat lodge and fasting ceremonies for protection, cedar branches cover the floor of many sweat lodges and some people make a circle of cedar when they are fasting. It is a guardian spirit and chases away the bad spirits. Cedar trees are very old, wise and powerful spirits.
Warning: When using cedar leaves for smudging, it is a Fire ceremony and the potential for fire damage and burns is real. Children should not perform this ceremony. The smoke from the herbs can set off your fire alarm system. Never leave a burning smudge stick or loose herbs unattended.
